Article: Kids' clothing size chart — height, age and body measurements

Minoti kids' size chart: the clothing size equals the child's height in centimetres, from 56 for a newborn to 170 for ages 14 to 15

Kids' clothing size chart — height, age and body measurements

European kids' sizes are based on height in centimetres, not age. Size 104 means “fits up to 104 cm tall”, which is roughly 3–4 years old. The age on the label is a hint, not a rule — height and chest measurement decide. The full chart from 56 to 164 cm is below.

These are body measurements, not garment measurements — clothes add room to move. The chart is the same for girls and boys up to 164 cm.

How to read the chart

Take your child's height and find the range it falls into. The size in the first column is the upper limit of that range — a child measuring 107 cm wears size 110, because they sit inside the 104–110 cm band.

If height points to one size and chest to another, go with the larger. A top that is tight across the shoulders cannot be worn at all, while sleeves that are slightly long turn up for a season and then fit.

How to measure your child

Measure over thin underwear with a soft tape, without pulling. Your child stands straight, arms down.

  1. Height — no shoes, back to the wall, heels together. Mark above the head in pencil and measure from the floor.
  2. Chest — at the widest point, under the arms, on a relaxed breath out.
  3. Waist — at the narrowest point of the torso, usually just above the navel. The tape should sit flat, not tight.
  4. Hips — at the widest point of the seat. This is the measurement that decides trousers and skirts.

Measure a baby lying down, from the crown of the head to the heel, with the leg gently straightened.

When your child is between sizes

Go up. Children aged 2–8 grow 5–7 cm a year on average, so the smaller size lasts one season and the larger one lasts two.

Two exceptions. Always size up on winter jackets and snowsuits, because a fleece or jumper goes underneath. Keep leggings, bodysuits and pyjamas close-fitting, since a size too big bunches up and rubs.

European sizes versus UK and US sizes

Europe sizes by height in centimetres. The UK and the US size by age. The conversion always runs through the age column above: size 116 cm is 5–6 years, so UK “5-6 years” and US “6” are the same garment.

Italian and French kids' sizes are also given in centimetres of height, so they map to European sizes one to one. Differences between brands are usually bigger than differences between countries — check the measurements rather than the number on the label.

Frequently asked questions

What are kids' clothing sizes?

European kids' sizes are heights in centimetres: 56, 62, 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110, 116, 122, 128, 134, 140, 146, 152, 158, 164 and 170. Each number is the maximum height the garment is cut for.

What are UK sizes for kids?

UK kids' sizes are given in years rather than centimetres. Convert through height: 104 cm is 3–4 years, 116 cm is 5–6 years, 128 cm is 7–8 years, 140 cm is 9–10 years and 152 cm is 11–12 years.

What age is size 150 in children's clothes?

There is no 150 in the European ladder — the nearest sizes are 146 (10–11 years) and 152 (11–12 years). Asian brands do use 150, and it corresponds to roughly 10–11 years, or 140–150 cm of height.

Is a kids' 10-12 medium or large?

In European sizing, 10–12 years covers sizes 146 and 152. Brands that use letters usually label that range as M or L for children, but letter sizing varies far more between brands than centimetre sizing does.

Is size 104 for a 3-year-old or a 4-year-old?

Both are correct. Size 104 covers heights of 98–104 cm, and that band holds tall three-year-olds and short four-year-olds alike. This is exactly why sizes are given in centimetres instead of years.

How far does the Minoti size range go?

Up to 170 cm. The measurement chart ends at 164 cm, and size 170 (14–15 years) is available on selected styles — for that size, use the chest measurement from the 158–164 cm row plus about 3 cm.
