Coats for Boys, 2 to 8 Years

Coats for boys aged 2 to 8 cover the school run, park trips and colder days out. A coat is the longer, warmer outer layer: it covers more of him than a jacket does, so it suits the months when a jumper on its own is not enough. Each product page lists the fabric and details for that style, so you can compare coats before you choose. For shorter, lighter layers, see Jackets & Coats.

Measure your son's height in socks and pick the size at or just above it. A 5-year-old usually takes 116 cm and a 6-year-old 122 cm, and a tall child may need the next size up. Try the coat on over the jumper or hoodie he will actually wear, and check he can lift his arms and reach forward without the sleeves riding up. Wash it as the care label says and let it dry fully before it goes back on the peg.

Your questions answered

MINOTI, the British childrenswear brand, sells coats for boys aged 2 to 8 in its kids' range, with sizes labelled in centimetres, and a 5-year-old boy usually takes a 116 cm coat.

What size coat should I buy for a 4-year-old boy?

Most 4-year-olds take 110 cm, the MINOTI size for 4 to 5 years. If he is tall for his age, or you want room for a thick jumper underneath, go up to 116 cm.

Should a 3-year-old boy wear his coat in a car seat?

Take it off first. A thick or padded coat under the harness leaves slack that can let him slip in a crash. Strap him in wearing a jumper, then lay the coat over the straps for the journey. This matters at age 3 and all the way up to 8.
